Open Call BAU AIR 2024

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Deadline May 5, 2024

In 2024 we will offer three BAU AIR residencies. BAU AIR is a customized four-week residency focused on artistic research, exploration, and experimentation. The residency provides time and space to explore new ways of working or presenting, to deepen themes, and/or to establish collaborations in the research phase of a new project. Submit your application using this form or, if you prefer to send a video, submit your application using this form.

Planned Residency Periods
Sept. 06 - Oct. 04, '24
Oct. 11th - Nov. 15, '24
Nov. 20 - Dec. 19, '24

For whom
BAU AIR is for independent, mid-career makers in the broad field of dance and performance who are based in the Netherlands. Makers who work off the beaten track and are motivated to contribute to the meeting place that is BAU with audience-oriented activities.

We encourage choreographers and artists from different socio-cultural and artistic backgrounds to apply. This includes those working in crossovers with pantomime, visual arts, music, theater and/or circus. The style of your dance will be less important in the selection process than the content of your research.

Mid-Career
Mid-career refers to the stage of your professional practice. You are eligible for the Basic Residency if you have produced at least five projects, independently or on commission, in the last few years and have received recognition in the cultural field, as evidenced by selection for presentations at relevant venues, festivals and/or presentation institutions, and/or articles in journals. Recent graduates are not eligible for this residency.

Deadline May 5, 2024
Until May 5, 2024, 11:59 pm, you can submit your residency proposal by filling out the application form. It is possible to save the information while working on it and continue later. The maximum size of your submission is 1 GB and the language can be either Dutch or English.

Application form
In the form we ask about your background as a maker, a portfolio with images that are representative of the work that you do and your plan for the residency. It is important that there is an artistic and/or social urgency. So make sure you have a well thought out plan and describe how BAU can be relevant to your artistic development. It is also possible to present your plan in a video of max. 5 minutes. In that case, take a look at this form.

Meeting Place
BAU informs colleagues and other interested parties about the various research projects taking place under our roof. A final presentation is an integral part of the residency. There is also the possibility to organize other activities. Think about a workshop, an open studio, a walk, a lecture, etc.

What does BAU AIR offer?
* A four-week research period in one of the BAU studios:
10x14 m, or 10x10 m.

* Weekly lunch with the BAU team
* Practical and artistic coaching
* Production of smallscale events
* New contacts with cultural professionals, organizations and audiences
* Online visibility and new visual material

Please note:
It is not possible to fill out one form for multiple residencies or to combine residencies for multiple projects. The purpose of the residency is not to be the completion of a project, but to be a learning experience.

Selection
The BAU AIR team, supplemented by two annually rotating professionals from the field, will select three makers for residencies from all submissions. In making the selection, we will consider the artistic qualities, the elaboration of the research plan, and the urgency of the plan for the creator and the cultural field.
We will announce the BAU residents in June 2024 and later invite them to an introductory meeting where we will go over the plans and tailor the residency.

FAQ

Can you apply when you don't live in the Netherlands but work here?
This residency is only for makers who live in the Netherlands. We understand that you may have an international working area, and sometimes work in the Netherlands, but for this residency it's necessary that you live in the Netherlands.

What exactly does mid-career artist mean?
The term mid-career relates to the stage in your work as an independent maker. A mid-career maker who wants to be considered for the BAU residency has in recent years found a clear artistic direction in which he/she/x wants to explore further. Realized at least 5 projects in it's own name or on it's own initiative with project grants, as a guest for a professional company/festival and/or if he/she/x has proven similar experience in the field.

What is part of the fee?
The fee of € 4.000 excl. VAT is to be spent as you choose and includes travel, accommodation and material costs, hiring of technology and other creators/employees. It is not possible to receive an allowance for travel, accommodation or material costs on top of this fee from BAU. And your research at BAU may not overlap with other funding sources on your budget.

Can you arrange accommodation in Amsterdam for me and/or co-workers?
No, unfortunately we cannot.

I want to send additional information, is that possible?
It is not possible to send additional information after submitting the form. Only complete applications will be processed.

What if I unexpectedly must break off the residency in the interim? Can I come back later?
The selection for the residency is binding. In case of unexpected situations, we will discuss the possibilities, but it is not guaranteed that you can finish the same residency later in the year.

What do you mean by a final presentation?
By this we mean a presentation to an audience of which the form and content is free. Think for example of a lecture performance about your research results, a conversation with an inspirator you consulted or a performance. The presentation can take place inside or outside, at BAU or if possible, at a city partner.

Am I required to give a final public presentation?
The BAU AIR program encourages knowledge exchange and meeting with an audience. Therefore, the final presentation is a regular part of each BAU AIR residency.

What if I received a project subsidy from the AFK, can I combine it with the residency?
It is possible to combine, if the AFK and BAU know about this and your BAU AIR research does not overlap with other funding sources.

Can I apply more than once per application round?
No, we would like to receive one project proposal per application round. It is not possible to combine multiple research proposals within one application.

Will I receive feedback on my application if it is rejected?
Unfortunately, this is not an option, due to the large number of applications we expect.

Can I invite people to collaborate on my residency?`
Yes, you can collaborate with dancers, performers, a composer, musician, dramaturg etc. The costs are at your own expense, there is no additional fee from BAU.
